"Roughly how much will it cost?" is understandably one of the first questions new clients ask me. "It depends" is true, but it doesn't help anyone. So in this article I'll explain transparently how the price of extensions is made up, what amounts you can expect and what follow-up costs to plan for. That way you can compare offers in and around Munich fairly.
What makes up the price
The total price of extensions essentially has three components:
- The hair: the biggest cost factor. What matters is quality (Remy with an intact cuticle or not), length, colour and whether it's single or double drawn.
- The work: bonding, application, cutting and styling. With keratin bonds every strand is placed by hand, one by one – that takes time and experience.
- The materials: keratin, tools, products used during the appointment.
Some salons list these separately; others – like us – include everything in a price per gram. At Shanta Hair that's from €7/g including labour.
Worked examples
To give you an idea, here are three typical scenarios based on our starting price of €7/g:
- Volume top-up, about 50 g: from around €350. Ideal if your hair already has a nice length but looks thin at the ends.
- Natural lengthening, about 100 g: from around €700. The most popular choice among our clients – noticeably more length and fullness with a natural transition.
- Full lengthening, about 150 g: from around €1,050. For a lot of length or very thick natural hair.
The exact price depends on the length, shade and texture you want. Our grams guide explains in detail how much hair you need. You'll get a firm quote after the free consultation.
The follow-up costs – which hardly anyone talks about
Extensions aren't a one-off investment. Honest salons are upfront about the ongoing costs from the start:
1. Maintenance
Every 6–8 weeks the bonds need to be moved up. With quality hair you mainly pay for the work, since the hair is reused. Maintenance is therefore considerably cheaper than the first application. Read more about what happens in our article on maintenance.
2. Top-up hair
Each time the strands are moved, a few millimetres of length and a little volume are lost. To keep your fullness the same, we often add a small amount of fresh hair.
3. Aftercare products
A mild, sulphate-free shampoo, a conditioner, heat protection and a suitable brush – you may already own much of this. More tips in our aftercare guide.
4. Removal
If at some point you want the extensions removed completely, that's a salon appointment. Please don't remove them yourself – it's the most common cause of damage.
Why prices in Munich vary so much
When you compare offers, you'll find differences of several hundred euros for what seems like the same service. The most common reasons:
- Hair quality: silicone-coated non-Remy hair is much cheaper but tangles sooner and can hardly be reused. More in premium vs. cheap human hair.
- Bond size: a few large bonds are quicker to place than many small ones – and therefore cheaper, but more visible and more of a strain.
- "From" prices: some offers only apply to very short lengths or a few strands.
- The stylist's experience and specialisation.
What "cheap" ends up costing
Let's look at a full year: if you start with cheap hair, it often has to be replaced completely at the first or second maintenance – so you pay the full price several times a year. Quality hair, with good care, can be re-bonded several times. Over twelve months, premium extensions are therefore often at a similar level or even lower – with a much nicer result and less risk to your natural hair.
How to save without compromising on quality
- Choose a realistic amount. Not everyone needs 150 g. Often 80–100 g looks more natural.
- Keep maintenance appointments on time. The longer you wait, the more hair tangles and needs replacing.
- Look after your hair. Well-kept hair can be reused more often.
- Don't remove them yourself. DIY attempts often ruin the hair and create extra costs.
Common questions about price
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. The consultation – in the salon or via WhatsApp with photos – is free and non-binding.
Can I pay in instalments?
Feel free to ask me directly – we can talk about individual arrangements during the consultation.
Why don't you list a fixed price online?
Because every head of hair is different. A reliable price requires me to have seen and felt your hair. The price per gram gives you a dependable guide, though.
Are extensions worth it for just a few months?
Yes, that's possible too – for a summer or a special occasion, say. Just bear in mind that, on top of the application, there'll be an appointment for gentle removal.
Are there discounts for regular clients?
Feel free to ask directly – we also share current offers on our Instagram @shanta.hair.
What if I'm not happy with the result?
Please talk to me directly. Small adjustments to the cut, placement or colour blend are often quick to make. That's exactly why we take so much time for the consultation beforehand – so the result matches what you had in mind from the start.
Our takeaway
Quality keratin bond extensions are an investment – but a predictable one. At Shanta Hair you pay from €7/g including labour, plus regular maintenance that stays manageable thanks to reusable premium hair. Don't compare offers only by the starting price, but by what you get over a whole year.
