"How many grams do I actually need?" is by far the most common question we hear in a first consultation. The honest answer: it depends – on your own hair, on the look you're after, and on whether you mainly want more volume, more length, or both. Still, there are reliable rules of thumb you can use to get a realistic picture before you even book a consultation. That's what we're breaking down here, along with price examples and the reasons "more" doesn't automatically mean "better."
What determines how much hair you need
Three factors decide how many grams of extension hair make sense for your goal:
- Your natural hair density: if your hair is already fairly thick, you'll need fewer grams for the same volume effect than someone with fine, thin hair.
- Desired length: the bigger the gap between your current length and your target length, the more grams are needed, since more hair has to be distributed across the whole head.
- Desired effect: a subtle, natural fullness needs noticeably less hair than a dramatic, XXL volume look, the kind you often see on influencers or red-carpet styles.
The rule-of-thumb table
These figures apply to full-head, handcrafted invisible keratin bonds and are based on more than 11 years of hands-on studio experience. If your starting hair is unusually fine or unusually dense, your personal recommendation may sit a bit above or below these ranges.
- 60–80 g: subtle extra fullness at roughly the same length – ideal for fine hair that should simply look denser, without anyone noticing you're wearing extensions.
- 90–120 g: noticeably fuller hair plus moderate length (about 2–4 inches) – by far the most commonly booked amount in our studio.
- 130–150 g: significant length (4–8 inches) combined with a full, dense result – suited to clients with medium to dense natural hair as a base.
- 150–180 g and above: maximum fullness, often for very long target lengths or a deliberately dramatic "big hair" look – here, careful distribution across many fine strands is essential so your natural hair isn't overloaded.
Length matters more than most people think
A common misconception: many clients underestimate how much pure length affects the gram count. Adding four extra inches of length often requires more grams than a 10% volume boost at the same length – simply because more hair mass has to be spread across the entire head down to the ends, so the result doesn't taper off thin.
Fine hair: less weight, more precision
With fine or delicate hair, the gram count matters less than how it's distributed. Handcrafted keratin capsules let us split the same amount of hair across many very fine strands – the weight at each attachment point stays low even though the overall result looks full. Machine-prefabricated methods usually don't allow this level of fine-tuning, which can cause pulling and tension more quickly on thin hair.
Why more isn't automatically better
It's tempting to go straight for the maximum amount – after all, the result should look impressive. But too much weight on too little natural hair can lead to tension, breakage, or in rare cases even thinning at the scalp over time. That's why, for finer or weaker starting hair, we often recommend starting moderately and carefully adding more at the first correction appointment 6–8 weeks later, once your natural hair has adjusted to the extra weight.
How we determine the right amount in a consultation
In our free consultation, we take a close look at your hair: density, texture, growth direction and scalp condition all factor in, along with your desired look – reference photos are always welcome. Based on that, we recommend a specific gram count that suits your hair, rather than simply selling you the largest possible amount. The goal is always a result that can be worn healthily and still looks great months later, not just on day one.
What does it cost? A quick calculation
Invisible keratin bonds at Shanta Hair start from €7 per gram, including labor. As a rough guide:
- 80 g (subtle volume) ≈ from €560
- 100 g (volume + moderate length) ≈ from €700
- 130 g (significant length + fullness) ≈ from €910
The exact price depends on the final recommended amount, hair quality and application effort, and is discussed individually during your consultation.
Our conclusion
There's no single number that fits every head of hair – but there is a sensible range for your goal. As a rough guide: 60–80 g for subtle fullness, 90–120 g for the most popular everyday look with noticeable volume and moderate length, and 130 g or more for dramatic length and maximum density. The most reliable answer, though, always comes from a personal consultation, where we assess your hair in person and work out the right amount together with you.
